Dr. Barry Feeney, Head of Computing
Welcome!

One reason to look at this page is to find out whether taking a degree in computing would be a good idea for yourself or someone you know. These times we all realise that these are serious decisions and how important it is to choose a field with real prospects and real rewards for talented people. We are all pressed for time so I will try to present the arguments succinctly to help you make an informed decision.

Why study Computing?

Computing is a challenging and rewarding field which is shaping the world as we experience it. Ireland is fortunate to have many of the major international players in the information revolution based here in this country. We have all heard of Google, Facebook, Microsoft but did you realise that eight out of ten of the biggest players in the computing world have significant bases in Ireland? Think also about all the small and medium companies operating in Ireland - from games development to security, from social media to mobile applications, new applications and new systems are constantly under development. There really is a wide range of exciting well paid opportunities for computing graduates who want to get into developing these systems. Think also about all the businesses you know - large or small they all depend on IT in some way - every business needs to know how to manage its IT resources for its own advantage - this is where our IT Management graduates find their roles.

Is it for me? If you like creating new things, are good at solving logical problems and enjoy working in teams you really should consider computing. Computing companies need people who can understand what others want and enjoy delivering this.

Whether in Ireland or around the world you will end up working in international teams - indeed many graduates use their computing qualification to travel the world, whether based in Ireland or abroad.   We use maths as a good pointer to logical ability and wouldn't advise taking these courses unless you expect to score a C or higher in ordinary level mathematics. Remember creating and deploying computer systems isn't an end in itself - computing power is needed for medicine, games, shopping, marketing, television, media and so on. You will end up working to deliver systems to people in other areas so your communications and teamwork skills are vital.
